My nickname "Joe" I assumed when I moved in 1993 to Cebu in Central Visayas as "Immigrant". It
was the time when US troops were still stationed in the Philippines-
"Hey, Joe" ..... was - especially with children - popular to say, because every GI was a "Joe". But also other foreigners were like that addressed.
Mostly then followed the more than a nice greeting than desire called announcement: "give me one Peso, please".
Today, this is barely heard, the Americans had left the Philippines after the eruption of the volcano Pinatubo.
